GreatCall, Inc. Expands Operations in Carlsbad,
Adds Jobs to North County Economy
Company Announces New Customer Care and Sales Call Center
Carlsbad Mayor Claude A. “Bud” Lewis to Participate in Ground Breaking
San Diego, Calif. – April 13, 2009 – GreatCall, Inc., creators of the Jitterbug cell phone, today
announced their plans to expand operations, officially breaking ground on the construction of a new customer
care and sales call center in Carlsbad, Calif. on Tuesday, April 14. GreatCall, the San Diego-based
company known for its simple Jitterbug cell phones, has succeeded amidst the economic downturn, growing
in size and resources.
GreatCall’s mission, through their Jitterbug phones and service, is to offer customers personalization and
a high level of customer service. Jitterbug phones are uniquely easy to use and include large, backlit
buttons, a bright screen with large text for easy viewing, and live operators to assist users. Since
Jitterbug’s launch in November 2006, GreatCall has enjoyed substantial growth in the competitive cellular
business, bucking the trend toward more complicated gadgets and bringing in over $100 million in funding.
“We’re delighted to see that yet another flourishing company is adding to the economic development of this
city,” said Claude A. “Bud” Lewis, Carlsbad Mayor. “This is a great example of what local companies can
achieve, and how innovative technologies can add value to our community. GreatCall’s expansion into Carlsbad
will serve to stimulate job growth, hopefully providing support for other local companies to do the same.”
“We’re extremely excited and proud to be expanding our operations,” said David Inns, GreatCall Chief Executive
Officer. “It’s important that we continue to provide our customers with the resources they need for a better
cell phone experience, and it’s equally important we give back to the community that helped support our growth.”
“While many companies may look to save money on operating costs by moving customer centers overseas, GreatCall
is dedicated to keeping its employee base here in the U.S.
With the Carlsbad office we’re adding local jobs and keeping our customers satisfied with ongoing, excellent care,” said Inns.
The new 23,400 square foot customer care and sales call center, located at 1950 Camino Vida Roble, Suite 100,
is scheduled to begin business operations in May 2009 when construction is complete. The Carlsbad office will
accommodate over 200 employees, and GreatCall has already begun the hiring process. The company plans to have
150 positions filled in the customer care and sales call center department by the time the offices open, with
the remainder of the positions filled thereafter. Prior to GreatCall’s occupancy, the building had been vacant for five years.
“It’s wonderful to succeed as a company—but it’s even better to know we’ve made a difference in so many lives,”
said Arlene Harris, GreatCall’s Founder and Chairwoman. “Jitterbug was created to provide a choice of wireless
service, to offer a perfectly simple cell phone experience with superior customer service—after two and a half
years, it’s gratifying to know that customers continue to value what we do differently. The new Carlsbad office
is a great move for us, for our community and for our customers.”
Key to GreatCall's success is the high-touch phone service it offers to Jitterbug customers. While much of the
cell phone industry deals in a “one-size fits all” model, Jitterbug services are tailored for the unique needs
of each subscriber, with users able to turn features on or off as they wish and a live 24/7 operator available
to place calls, and program customers’ phone book or other applications.
Jitterbug has received prominent national media accolades from the Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, The New
York Times, Washington Post and major TV broadcast networks. In 2008, Jitterbug was recognized as the Best Small
Company by the American Society of Aging and Best Overall Company at the Stevie Awards for Women in Business.
Other substantial recognition and awards include the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Associations 2007
design award, the esteemed Andrew Seybold Choice Award for Best New Wireless Company of 2007, finalist for
CES’s 2007 Last Gadget Standing competition, New York Times’ Top 10 Brilliant Ideas and Reader’s Digest
100 Best Products.
