In the early 1990's, Martin
Cooper, and Arlene Harris, along with her parents and two brothers - all pioneers in early wireless telecommunications - founded SOS Wireless, a company dedicated to providing the senior population with telephone service for emergencies.
The SOS Phone
The SOS product was an oversized, three-button phone powered by a AAA battery,
that could connect a customer with 911, a towing service or an SOS operator
who would place calls for customers on request. "We gained 25,000 wonderful
and loyal customers and we learned a lot about what they liked and didnĂt
like about wireless service," says Harris, now CEO of GreatCall. "As technology
advanced and cell phones got smaller and more complicated, we continued to
focus on all the people who need a cell phone simply for safety and to keep
in touch with friends and loved ones. We wanted to find a better way to give
them just that."
The Next Step
In 2004, Cooper and Harris
were invited to bring their idea for a simple cellular phone to Samsung, the
world's leading telecommunications manufacturer. "We greatly appreciate the
world class team at Samsung for their commitment, dedication and support of
our mission," says Harris. Our thousands of customers relying on SOS phones
will become the first users of the new Jitterbug phones. We'll continue to
work tirelessly to earn their loyalty and the loyalty of new customers for
years to come by introducing products that are simple to use.
